What are VIPs?

In VIPs, the principle of a thermos flask is transferred into panel form – providing an optimal physical method of insulation. VIPs are highly thermally insulating panels that deliver an unprecedented level of thermal performance at minimal thickness.

 

 

 

What are VIPs made of?

The pressure-resistant core material of VIPs consists of compressed, microporous powder. This powder core is hermetically sealed in a high-barrier film using a special technique and evacuated, i.e., air is pumped out. The special film also automatically protects VIPs against the ingress of air and water vapour.



What can VIPs do?

As a rule of thumb: VIPs have ten times the thermal insulation capacity of conventional insulation materials of the same thickness. In other words, 2 cm of VIP insulation can replace 20 cm of fibre or foam insulation. VIPs are also characterised by a service life of up to 50 years. Refrigerators using our VIPs consume up to 50 % less energy. Containers equipped with VIPs enable five-day temperature-stable transport of heat- or cold-sensitive goods – without external energy supply. Using VIPs in new builds or renovation projects reduces heating costs and improves the CO₂ balance.

Applications

Wherever extreme cold or thermal insulation is required, Vakutherm provides solutions. The significant reduction in insulation thickness with Vakutherm enables designs that were previously technically impossible – while still meeting insulation standards:
  • U-value for renovation: 0.25 W/m²K, for new builds: 0.17 W/m²K

  • Floor refurbishment with 30 mm Vakutherm insulation board

  • Thermal conductivity improvement: 3× higher with PU, 5× higher with XPS

Storage durability
Vakutherm insulation boards can be stored almost indefinitely under dry conditions (relative humidity <60%) and temperatures between 5 °C and 30 °C.
